After reading the book "Maui and the Sun" the children wanted to make some sun pictures. Using ideas from our inquiry topic, Maori Language week and maths (fractions) we made some sun pictures with the help of nine students from the Mt Hobson Middle School. We decorated a circle with swirls and koru like a Maori carving. Then we got another circle and divided it up into eight equal pieces for the sun's rays. We glued these around the outer edge of the circle. Thank you Mt Hobson students for helping us produce some great art work.

Learning a Waiata with Room 14
Room 14 came to our class to help us near a new waiata to sing when we go to watch the floundering project. They demonstrated whanaungatangi, helping us learn the words and the tune and being great role models. Thank you Room 14 and Miss Davis.

A Visit to the Stardome
Team one visited the Stardome to learn more about the sun and the moon. Josh helped us see how we get day and night on earth and the seasons. Then we were able to look at models of rockets and the space shuttle as well as have our photo taken "wearing a space suit". Looking at the stars and planets in the night sky in the planetaruim was exciting as was watching a movie about visiting the planets. It was a great way to learn so much more about how the sun and moon are important to us.

Duffy Certificate Winners
Heilala has set herself a goal of getting up on to blue level in reading and she has been finishing off all her Explain Everything reading activities to make sure she practises what she has learnt. She was this weeks Room 16 winner of the Duffy certificate and chose the book about Little Why. We all enjoyed sharing this book and joined in the reading aloud of it. Keep up the good work Heilala.
Bentley collected his certificate from August when he was away. He has been finding new words to use in his amazing story writing. He also shared his book about the Little Yellow Digger and the children liked trying to guess what the next rhyming words would be at the end of each line.

Our New White Board
Mr Shaw and Mr Andrew came to replace our white board with a new one. There was lots of noise getting the old board off and underneath there was an old blackboard. The children had fun writing their names on the old board with chalk. Now we have a nice clean board.
