This is What Happened during Assembly!

Today during assembly the fire alarm rang.  Room 16 knew what to do.  They quietly and quickly went outside and lined up waiting for the roll to be called.  Then we got the message that we could go back into assembly.  On our way back inside we saw the fire engine and the firemen.  It was all very exciting and proved to be good motivation for our writing.

Planning and Making Kites and Paper Planes.

At Maker Space Room 16 constructed a kite.  We found out about the design features of a good kite and how you need to test, modify and maybe even rethink your design.  So when we made paper planes as well as our own kites we realised how real inventors try and try again to get things right.  We had fun constructing and flying our own kites and paper planes.

Mufti Day

Friday was Mufti Day which meant for a gold coin donation the children didn't have to wear school uniform.  Room 16 took full advantage of this and came to school in their colourful clothes.  There was also a sausage sizzle at lunch time.

Getting ready for Matariki

Kristina checking which paper strips are correct
On Friday afternoon instead of Jump Jam we did some craft activities with a Matariki theme.  Bentley and Kristina were very patient in weaving coloured paper through slits in their colourful stars.  What a great way to combine two Matariki themes of learning to weave with a Matariki star.

Bentley concentrating on getting it coloured paper woven through the correct slits.

Abbey's Duffy Certificate

Abbey was the winner of the Duffy Certificate this week as she has been using her big patience muscles and waiting without fuss to talk to the teacher.  She chose a book about puppies and shared it with us.  We learned about different breeds of puppies.

A Visit from Kauri Flats School

Kauri Flats School came to visit Point England and two students, Kushal and Ashveer came to spent some time in Room 16. We made paper planes together.  The children watched how Kushal and Ashveer made their planes to see if they made their planes differently and could give them any tips.  Both Kushal and Ashveer were very quick at folding their planes.  Then we went outside to fly them.  The boys enjoyed having so many friends to offer advise and help them and Room 16 enjoyed their visit and look forward to Kushal and Ashveer coming again.

Always Here, Never Late

Week four winners of our class Always Here, Never Late certificates were Odyn, Jeremiah, Talanoa and Flynn.  Jeremiah now has 3 certificates.  Well done Jeremiah.

Bentley's Paper Plane stories

The children have been learning how to fold paper planes, test them out to see how well they fly and modify them if they need it.  This has been the motivation for some thoughtful writing.

Bentley wrote two stories about his planes.

"I fly my paper plane made of rectangles and triangles.  I tried it again because I needed to fix it to make it better."

"I like my paper plane.  My paper plane went up and over the rugby post.  How high did it go?  It went high to the rainbow."
