A Koala Bear gift

Jerome with his koala bear.
Mrs Ireland who helps us in Room 16 on a Tuesday recently went to Australia.  On her return she gave all the children a little koala bear.  The children wrote cards to thank Mrs Ireland and Talanoa did a great job decorating and writing in his card.

Making Kite Tails Fly

At Makerspace the children are making kites.  They tested materials to see what would make good kite tails and found crepe paper was light enough to fly and so would make good kite tails.

"I flew my kite.  It is good at flying.  It is a blue kite.  It flew up high."  By Flynn

Making Dragon's Fire

The first frost of winter provided a good discussion topic for writing.  Jerome went out and discovered the grass was all icy, white and crunchy.  He ran inside and announced he could make "dragon's fire".  Of course all the children wanted to find out how he could do this so he shared his "secret".

Friday Helpers

On Friday afternoon seven pupils from the Mt Hobson Middle School come to Pt England to do Community Service.  They came to help us with some paper weaving activities as it will soon be Matariki (the Maori New Year).  Weaving new baskets is one of the traditional crafts undertaken during Matariki.  It was a bit tricky trying to make the paper go over and under but with an extra pair of hands to help the children were soon able to complete the task.
Bentley is making the ends neat.

Tuis for Te taiao o tamaki at Te Oro

"Our tuis are all shiny.  They are beautiful," said Heilala.

Heilala is right.  Now that the children have finished decorating their tuis at Makerspace they do look beautiful and shiny just like real tuis.
Jerome shows one of the tuis.

Fixing the Teaching Station

The teaching station's wheels became wobbly and wouldn't move very well so I had to ask Mr Andrews if he could have a look at it.  The children were very interested in the tools Mr Andrews brought with him to use - an electric drill, a screw driver and a pair of pliers and they were keen to see how each tool was used.  It didn't take long for the teaching station to be up right and on four wheels that run smoothly.  Thank you Mr Andrews for a lesson in tools and how to fix things as well as repairing the teaching station.
