Even though Leylah has been at home because she is not well, she has continued her learning. Well done Leylah for doing some more learning from home. We listened to the story about the bear who liked ice cream and thought it was a funny story but it made us hungry thinking about what sort of ice cream we liked best. Get well soon Leylah, we miss you.
We have been having so much fun at school - blowing bubbles, having picnics outside, playing in the sand, and finally getting to play on the playground. School is cool!
For a fun craft activity, Leylah made not one dinosaur but she made a dinosaur family and labelled them. What a lovely idea Leylah. I like the way you thought about where to take a photo of your family. A grassy setting was just the perfect place for them.
We are so happy to be back at school! We had a fun day on our first day back and here is a video of us enjoying being with our friends even if it was in a different way.
The Duffy certificates for week 5 were awarded to Athena and Dothan. Athena has been "sharing her maths knowledge at our class meets and working hard at her distance learning tasks". Dothan has been "consistently doing her work on her distance learning tasks." Well done Athena and Dothan for keeping up your learning.
Today AJ decided to learn some of the words at his level. They will be useful when he writes his stories because he won't have to stop writing to look them up. They will already be in his brain ready to write down. Good thinking ahead AJ.
AJ had fun making dinosaurs. He made one called James and then he made some origami friends for James to play in the mud with. He gave them some plants to eat. I like your story about your dinosaurs AJ and the fact that you made him some friends. We all need friends and I guess even dinosaurs might have liked to have friends to be with too.
Leylah has been using some great maths thinking to see that 2 x 10 is the same as 10 x 2. I like the drawing you did of the duck and her 9 ducklings to solve this problem. You also answered all the reading questions and managed to find so many rhyming words. Great work Leylah.
Leylah drew a map to show how she would get to school. She also drew and labelled the buildings she passed on her way to school. I think if I followed her map I would not get lost.
Leylah has found that maths and reading come in handy when you want to do some baking. She read the recipe carefully and measured out the ingredients and made the most delicious looking cake. Well done Leylah. You have had a very busy weekend cooking, washing up the dishes as well as doing your home learning.
Leylah went outside into her garden and found a plant to draw for our Thoughtful Thursday activity. I like the way you have included in your picture some of the little bugs you saw too. You have looked carefully at the shape of the leaves and how they are smaller at the top of plants than at the bottom. You have also been busy with your reading, writing and maths. What a great effort Leylah.
The days have been getting warmer in Auckland and AJ went for his first swim this summer. What a nice way to cool off AJ. You look so happy at your favourite place in your neighbourhood.
Leylah was awarded a certificate for a wonderful class family she made out of paper chain people. She was so kind to included all her class mates. (You can see a photo of her work).
Last week Team 1 drew self portraits for their Friday fun day. Here is a movie of their great efforts.
Leylah has been helping her family by watering the plants, sorting and folding the washing. What a great help you are to your family. You are always thinking of others. You are also kind to think about the plants needing water after the sunny days we have had. Your little brother is watching you watering the plants. It is good you are showing him how to be kind too. Well done Leylah.
One of the groups the children belong to is a "class family". Here is AJ answering questions from the book "Our Class is a Family" and AJ will explain what a "class family" is. Great work AJ.
For writing today AJ thought about something he would like to do when he goes back to school. His best friend is Benji and AJ thought he and Benji might like to climb the big tree outside our classroom. I think you would both enjoy climbing the tree. You would be able to see all of the playground from so high up.
Our Team Challenge this week was to draw a self portrait and bring it to our team meet on Friday. AJ took up the challenge and made a life size AJ complete with his favourite clothes. What a fantastic replica AJ. That must have taken you sometime to draw, cut out and paint. What a great idea of making something so original.
Leylah has been very busy doing craft activities and she has painted a wonderful self portrait like a real artist. What a beautiful picture. I am sure your family are very proud to have such a lovely picture to hang on the wall. You have also found time to do some of your writing activities. What a great effort Leylah.
Mey-Lee has been coming to our Team and Class Meets. She participated in the class meet by writing out her numbers and letters neatly. Good effort Mey-Lee.
AJ is an author and illustrator of a lovely book about his family. He put a lot of thought and effort into his book so he was awarded a Duffy Certificate at assembly this week.
