"Our tuis are all shiny.  They are beautiful," said Heilala.

Heilala is right.  Now that the children have finished decorating their tuis at Makerspace they do look beautiful and shiny just like real tuis.

Wheels and Whacky Hair Day

It was a different day at school when you don't have to wear school uniform and you can bring your bike or scooter to school.  The children enjoyed whizzing around the school at lunchtime.

Making Tuis and Eels at Makerspace

Team one has studied the animals, fish and bird life that live in and around the Omaru Creek.  This was the basis of a mural that was displayed at the Te taiao o tamaki at Te Oro in the last week of term one.  The children learnt the skills needed to complete the tuis and eels each week at Makerspace.

Serve For New Zealand

Today New Zealanders celebrate ANZAC Day.  As we honour those that have served us in previous wars, an initiative has asked New Zealanders to volunteer or undertake an act of service either on, or in the lead up to, ANZAC Day.  Prince Harry backed this initiative saying, "This initiative is a way for kiwis to remember the service of others in the past, and to continue that tradition of generosity and sacrifice in a practical way."
Point England school decided to serve our community by tidying up the local reserve on the last day of term but Cyclone Cook had other ideas.  We have postponed our task of service until next term but we did get out and tidy up our grounds.

Te taiao o tamaki at Te Oro

As we all could not go up to Te Oro to see the performances , art work and other displays we joined in by live feed.  We watched the Point England Kapa Haka team perform and even joined in the singing.  Then the children got a surprise - "There's out tui's!" said Odyn.  The children of team one have been busy making birds and eels to go on our mural for a mural to be displayed so to see their animals being shown was exciting.

Week 10 Duffy Certificate Winner

Flynn has been trying to write his very own stories, thinking of a good story with some interesting words, sounding out the words he didn't know and putting it all together.  So Flynn was this weeks winner of the Duffy Certificate in Room 16.  What a great "can do" attitude Flynn  and thank you for letting us read your new book.  It was a story we all enjoyed.

Year 8 gives a Helping Hand

Four year 8 students came to give Room 16 a helping hand.  They were able to help us using Kid Pix on the computer, read to some of the children, listen to the children read and help with making some thank you cards.  It was nice for the children to get to know some of the older students and for the older students to remember what it was like when they were five.  The children enjoyed their company.

Where in the World is Portland?

The children were very excited to get a comment on their blog from Portland, Oregon.  This led to questions about where was Portland and was it like Auckland?  It was a great opportunity for the children to learn about another country through Goggle.
Alfonzo shows us where in the world Portland is.

Finding out about Magnets

Jeremiah was playing with the magnetic shapes.  He decided to see if the triangular shape would stick to anything else so he went on a hunt around the room.

He found out they could stick to a chair and also the teaching board.  Good investigation skills, Jeremiah.
