Making A Pretend Volcano

A volcano science experiment was something the children enjoyed doing after learning how volcanoes are formed.  They knew that a volcano is usually a conical shape when the molten rock or magma, ash and gases from under the earth's surface escapes from an opening so when we made some pretend volcanoes out of sand, they were able to make a conical shape.  The next step was to put some baking soda and vinegar into the "crater" to make the lava and watch the results.

A Few Highlights from Terms 1 and 2

It was a strange term one and two this year - the beginning of term one and the end of term 2.  We were busy in the second term enjoying being back together after not seeing each other for so long.  Here are a few highlights of some of the things we have done in the first half of 2020.

More Maths Measuring

When we wanted to find out who was the tallest person in our class we just compared our heights.  So when we wanted to find out who had the longest name in our class so we wrote our names on a piece of paper then tried to compare them but we found a problem.  Some people wrote in lovely big letters and some had small writing.  This made a long name look small and a small name look big.  What could we do to make a comparison seem equal?  Then someone remembered that to measure two things, the units of measurement need to be the same - if we all wrote in the same size squares then we could count the squares.  It didn't matter if the writing was big or small!  Rataimore had the longest name as she needed 9 squares to write her name.

Animal Yoga Poses

As part of our Engage programme we have been doing some animal yoga poses.  We found if we did our breathing exercises first to get ourselves feeling calm then it was much easier to stand on one leg like a flamingo.  Also if we focused on something that didn't move but looked straight ahead it was so much easier to balance.
Olivia hung upside down like a bat

Rataimore found standing like a flamingo was easy

Elena used her "outstretched wings" for balance

Getting Ready For Our Class Photo

On Monday we had our class photo taken.  We were asked to get in height order from tallest to smallest.  It was easy as we have been learning about how to compare how tall we were with a friend so we were able to quickly get the job done.

Team Assembly Certificate Day

We are finally back to having team assemblies again!  It was nice having Thursday certificates again to reward the children who have been working hard in class.  It is always hard to decide who to give certificates to when everyone is working so hard but Ms Hockly says - just two!  This week Bavin has been planning his stories and trying to use his letter sounds to write words that he doesn't know.  Elena has done some exceptional work in Maths.  When I tested her she really thought hard before answering and in class discussions she was able to add more information and help other people see why she thought an answer was a better one.  Well done for your hard work this week Bavin and Elena.

This is how we did maths today!

We are learning about measuring in maths.  We found out you could compare two things to see which thing was the bigger.  So now we are at level 1 and we can be near one another we decided to compare how tall we are compared to our friend.  Then we all stood in a line and found out who was the tallest and who was the smallest.  This is how we look!
