Olympics Fun Day from Team 1 PES on Vimeo.
The Olympics Fun Day was an opportunity for playing games and mixing with other year levels. The children were put into groups representing different countries, They had to work together to earn points for their country by competing against other teams and for good sportsmanship. It was a great day finishing with a relay with the seniors competed against the staff and helpers. Thanks to all the helpers for making it such a well organised and fun day.

A Day at the Beach from Team 1 PES on Vimeo.
We finally managed to have our school picnic and what a day we had! The children had a great day finding crabs, covering each other with sand, making castles and decorating them, having a picnic under the trees and going for a swim with their friends.

Recently the children had 8 swimming lessons over at the Glen Innes pools. With practise, they were all making progress with lots of shouts to "Look at me!" as they mastered a skill.
Many thanks to the instructors for helping to keep the children safe around water over the summer.

Popping Popcorn
Popping Popcorn from Team 1 PES on Vimeo.
Room 16 made popcorn as part of our inquiry into how things change. We found that popcorn "changed from hard yellow kernals to soft, fluffy, white yummy popcorn". We watched it spinning around "as if it was in was in a tornado" and then "explode out of the machine." We liked taste testing. Jin even found popcorn that "looked like an elephant."

Making Jelly
Room 16 Makes Jelly from Team 1 PES on Vimeo.
Making jelly was a great way to see the changes that happened when a solid becomes a liquid and then using cooling becomes a solid again. It provided motivation for the children's writing.
Jeyda wrote, "The jelly wobbled because it was solid in the packet. Now it is a liquid but it needed to be put in the fridge until it was good for us to eat."
Savanah wrote, "The jelly was wobbly and sticky because when we made it, it looked like it was frozen."
The texture of the jelly was also a writing motivation with Adrianna writing, "The jelly is yummy at school. It wobbled and wobbled, left and right. It wobbled sideways."
Marius enjoyed the jelly, "I was eating jelly in Room 16. Everybody chose their favourite colour. The jelly was amazing. I loved the jelly. I ate it all. The jelly was wobbly and it stuck on the spoon."

Making Pikelets
This term we have been looking at changes that happen to liquids, gases and solids when we heat, mix or cool them. Room 16 made pikelets or mini pancakes to see the changes that happened to ingredients when we mixed them and then heated them. Liquids became solid when mixed with flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. We even used our maths to double the recipe. The best thing was having a taste at the end.

The Little Orange Tractor
We are very lucky to be getting a cycle track put in around the outside of the playground. It has provided the children with motivation for their writing and drawing as big trucks come into the playground and dump the track surface material and little tractors dig out the pathway. It is all very exciting to see how things are made and what will happen next. Hamza and Adrianna have written their blogs about the happening in the playground this week.

Abbey is Missing Something.
Abbey has lost her first tooth so we put it in a wee packet so she could take it home. I wonder if the tooth fairy will visit tonight?
Fun in the Rain
Today it started raining on our way down to the pool for our swimming lesson so we had to run in the rain. It was fun running to keep warm and dodging the rain drops. We even wrote about our experience when we got back to school and here are some of our pictures and stories.

Zoo Encounters
Room 16 Zoo trip from Team 1 PES on Vimeo.
Looking at and learning about the animals at the zoo is always exciting. Most animals keep their distance but on a recent visit, Room 16 were treated to a close encounter at the cheetah enclosure. Two keepers were patting and petting the cheetahs as if they were family pets! Then the cheetahs brought their morning snack of bones to eat right in front of the window. We were able to observe them up close. This was a highlight for Room 16.

Saying Thank You To Our Helpers
We were very fortunate to have parent and support staff helpers on our zoo trip. The children are learning how important it is to say "thank you" to people who help us . All the children made cards. Hamza and Jeyda made cards to give to Mrs Forbes.

Up Close to a Rhino
When we went to the zoo we were very lucky to see some of the animals up close and get a good look at them. The rhinoceros came over to the front of his enclosure and Marius wrote about him.
"At the zoo I liked the rhinoceros because when I saw it, it was coming right up close. The rhinoceros was ginormous and his long horn was scary and sharp." By Marius
Gabriella drew a picture of him.

We Are Movie Stars.
"For our movie at the Manaiakalani Film Festival I was dressed up as a wolf and Jeyda was dressed up as Little Red. Little Red and Harold helped me be a champion." By Marius
Take a look at our movie "Winning Ways" to see how Wolfie became a champion.

Winning Ways
Wolves are usually pretty speedy - well they need to be speedy in most of the stories they feature in. But this wolf is really "out of shape". Watch our movie to find out how he succeeds in achieving his dream.
The stars of our movie are Marius as Mr Wolf, Jeyda as Little Red, Savanah as Harold, and members of Room 16 as Wolfie's friends.

Making the Olympic Rings
The weather was finally fine enough to hold our Olympics fun day. Mr Burt had an idea about making the Olympic rings with coloured plates while a drone filmed it all from above. The children had to sit around the pre marked out rings holding different coloured plates. Then on the count of three they held the plates over their head. It all went amazingly well with some great shots from above. The children were amused when a local magpie decided to investigate the drone but it all ended well. If you would like to see the drone footage go to the blog post "A Birdseye View of the Olympic Rings" dated 4 November on our blog.

An Awesome Artist at Work
We went to look at the pictures of our Olympic medalists that Mr Jacobsen has been creating in the hall. Vaha was most impressed with how Mr Jacobsen drew the images and commented that "Mr J 's an awesome artist." We all thought he was too and we appreciated the finished images more after we had watched the artist at work.

More Mr Bear's Picnic stories
We enjoyed reading the book Mr Bear's Picnic and this motivated the children to write some descriptive stories and illustrate them. These include stories by Gabriella, Adrianna and Savanah.
Here is Gabriella's story. "Mr Bear Is a leader of the bees. Mr Bear carefully took out the honey from the bees golden hive."
