Up Close to a Rhino

When we went to the zoo we were very lucky to see some of the animals up close and get a good look at them.  The rhinoceros came over to the front of his enclosure and Marius wrote about him.

"At the zoo I liked the rhinoceros because when I saw it, it was coming right up close.  The rhinoceros was ginormous and his long horn was scary and sharp."  By Marius

Gabriella drew a picture of him.

Wheels at School

On the last day of term we had a "Wheels Day" when the children were able to bring their "wheels" to school.  Bikes, scooters and skate boards were brought to school and the children had great fun whizzing around the school on their wheels.

For motivation in writing we looked at a picture of a grey and white cat who obviously liked eating up all his dinner.   He seemed to be sitting in the gutter watching what was going on around him.  Jin and Marius have used some good language such as "lounging" and "watching the view" to indicate how he was sitting and from the size of him what he liked doing.

"A kitty cat is lounging in the gutter.  He must be warm.  I will hug him and give him a cuddle. Meow. Meow. Meow." By Marius

"Kitty Cat was resting and he was watching the view.  He ordered a pizza.  He loved pepperoni pizzas every day."  By Jin

Something to do on a wet lunchtime.

We have had quite a few wet lunchtimes to find quiet activities to do.  Marius likes art and drawing and on Friday he drew around his hands.  Then he decided to draw his arms and his picture grew from that.  He added a body in a red Pt England top and legs in black Pt England track pants finishing off the picture with a head.  Well done Marius for finding something different to do.

My Grandma McGarvey Duffy Book

Marius was our Duffy Certificate winner this week and he chose a Grandma McGarvey book.  He shared it with us as Room 16 enjoys her books and then Marius used the story in his writing.

"Grandma McGarvey went to the dump up the hill.  She got in her car.  She drove fast and all of her stuff fell out of the car.  She was upset."  By Marius

What Hiwi the Kiwi taught us

"We went to the hall and we saw Hiwi the Kiwi.  He is cool and he taught us we have to look after the fish"  By Charlotte

"Hiwi the Kiwi came to school and he taught us how to be safe in a boat and to wear a life jacket.  We are not to kill the seagulls and birds by leaving plastic around the beach."  By Tumanako

"We have got to wear a life jacket when you go fishing.  If you do not wear a life jacket you will drown."  By Marius

Our Olympic Flag Ceremony

At assembly we had an Olympic flag raising ceremony with the olympic flag carried into the hall and raised on a flag pole up on the stage.  The New Zealand flag was also carried in by a proud flag bearer.  The children chose to write and draw about this ceremony.

"In the hall I saw the Olympic flag up on the stage because it is the opening ceremony tomorrow." By Jarra

"Tomorrow is the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Brazil.  They are in Rio." By Tumanako

"Today I am excited because it is going to be the Olympics and I saw cool people holding fire sticks to light the Olympic flame."  By Marius

Our First Visit to see Harold

We were very excited to have our first visit to see Harold in his special classroom.  We walked up the steps and sat down only to find Harold was still in his house.  Lyn talked to him and he told us all about healthy eating.

"I saw Harold come out of his house to talk to us about eating a variety of healthy food.  We need healthy food every day." By Marius

"Harold the giraffe slept in his bed.  He showered and he washed his hair." By Charlotte

"What's that car doing?"

At lunchtime Temalisi went out into the bay outside Room 16 and said "What is that car doing in our bay?"  We all watched and found out that Little Tractor's battery had gone flat and it wouldn't start.  "Has it got a battery like our iPads?" asked Tumanako.  "We have to charge them when they go flat," said Marius.  The car battery helped Little Tractor start and off he went to do another job.

Flag Preferences

While the adult population of New Zealand is voting for their preferred choice of flag, our 5 year olds have also had discussions on this topic.  Here are some of their stories they wrote.

Learning to type

Some of the children are learning how to type up their stories on their iPad and are finding this a handy skill.

"It is quicker to type up the words than writing them down," said Marius.

"You need to look carefully for the letters you need," said Jarra

Charlotte is "publishing" her favourite story of the week.

Week TwoTeam Certificates.

Week two has seen Marius get a Duffy Award for being a kind Pt Englander and using polite manners.  He choose the book about Big Chicken.  Charlotte got a team award for continuing to do her iPad reading activity even though it got tricky.  She was able to finish her activity - good "stickability" Charlotte.  Savanah who started school on Tuesday got a certificate too.   Welcome to Pt England, Savanah.

Drawing Bubbles with Kid pix

Today we began using Kid pix by learning how to draw a circle and close it up tight like a bubble.  We had to go into the colour swatch, choose a colour and then a pencil before using the mouse to make a bubble.  That was the tricky part but we all had a turn and managed to draw some beautiful bubbles.

"I made lots of bubbles on the computer.  I was practising making bubbles that were closed."  Dictated by Marius
Marius drew plenty of bubbles.

Reading Activities on an iPad

Marius, Jin and Charlotte were able to do their reading activities on an iPad.  They had to find the text in their reading book.  The clue to help them was a small part of a picture which they matched with one in their book. After finding the correct page it was down to work of sequencing the text correctly on their iPad and read it out to see if it made sense.  Marius, Jin and Charlotte did a good job working as a team to help each other with the tricky steps

First Team Assembly for 2016

We had our first Team One Assembly for 2016 on Friday.  We sang some favourite songs and then certificates were awarded to two people in each class for their work during the week.  In Room 16 Marius was awarded a certificate for being focused in reading and being able to do follow up iPad activities by listening carefully to the instructions.  Temalisi was also awarded a certificate for correctly the letters in her name.

A great start to 2016 rewarded with a certificate.
