Young Ocean Explorers at Pt England
Steve from the Young Ocean Explorers came to talk to the children and show some footage that he had shot of marine animals. Steve is an underwater cameraman and he had some amazing photos of whales, sharks, turtles and other fish close up in their environment. His talk was a great motivation for our writing as these stories and pictures show just how engaged the children were.

A Rainy Day Activity
On a recent trip to the zoo the boys were interested in the tall towers and cranes we went passed. With the wet weather over the last two lunchtimes Nate and Tupou decided to try and build a tall tower. They practised and practised how to build a tower taller than themselves and today they finally made it!

National ShakeOut Day
On National ShakeOut Day we practised what to do in the event of an earthquake. When the school sounded the alarm the children promptly remembered to "Drop, Cover, Hold". They dropped on to the floor and quickly moved under the nearest desk and held onto a desk leg to prevent it moving off them. It was a drill that was carried out quickly and without fuss. We then thought about the fact that an earthquake might happen when we were outside and Nate was able to demonstrate how we could keep safe outside.

Ducks At School
During the recent wet weather the children were amused to see a family of ducks come on to the field. When it stopped raining we went outside and watched the two ducks and five ducklings looking around for food. They found some bread to eat but it wasn't long before a big seagull also spotted the bread and decided it was his bread. We watched the seagull trying to chase the duckling away but Mother Duck was keeping a close eye on her ducklings and kept them safe."Mother and Father Duck and their ducklings came to school. They are hungry and they like bread. The big seagull came to school. He wanted some bread too. The baby ducklings stole the seagull's bread. The seagull tried to stamp on the duckling. Mother Duck said shoo to the seagull and she told the duckling to run home. What an adventure for the ducklings." Dictated to the teacher by Tupou

Our "Duck Says Don't " Stories.
Room 16 enjoyed reading the story "Duck Says Don't" by Alison Ritchie.
Goose goes away on holiday and gives Duck the job of looking after the pond while she is away. Unfortunately Duck is a bit too enthusiastic and signs soon appear everywhere and his friends decide they don't like being bossed around and they leave. I will let some of our writers share their stories of how Duck solved this problem.
"I saw Goose and he is going on holiday. Duck is in charge of the pond. He put up some signs like "No swimming", "No fishing". At the end of the story he was kind and everyone played with him." Story by Samson
"Duck said, "No splashing Dragonflies and Frogs." Duck said, "No swimming, no racing, no jumping." He was bossy. Everyone is sad when Duck is in charge of the pond. He was being mean." Story dictated by Tupou
"Duck is so not being kind. Duck was so not being kind when he put up the signs. Then Duck put a new sign up. Because Duck was mean to his friends they went away." Story by Alexandra
"I like the Duck because he was kind at the end. Duck was not kind at the beginning and the frogs went away and the frogs found somewhere else to play. The frogs met some new friends and the Duck said I am sorry frogs." By Joshua

Feeding the Eels
Today during Makerspace the children visited the eels again. They were fascinated by the eels on their last visit and this time Tupou and Pene were brave and fed them. Pene said "They have sharp teeth but they didn't bite me. I touched Chompy, the eel. He is getting bigger." Tupou liked watching the eels swimming.
